Will Hutton – Damn That Democracy Thing, Tell ‘Em What To Do Jezza!

That Will Hutton is an elitist none can deny. His perfect definition of a well functioning economy being that everyone do what Willy Hutton damn well tells them to do. An  example of this on display in his column this week. Labour must come out full blooded for Remain because Will Hutton thinks that Remain is the right course of action. This democracy thing be damned for course, if hoi polloi won’t do what Willy thinks they should unforced then they must be forced. The expressed views of those polloi meaning nothing if and when they conflict with the rarified vision of the man who drove the Industrial Society into bankruptcy.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]It’s a familiar story, running like this. The party must “respect” the referendum result[/perfectpullquote]

Those inverted commas really rather telling us all we need to know about the views of the odious Mr. Hutton. If the people don’t want what Hutton think they should want then their voice has no power or weight, they and their opinions about the world are a problem to be overcome, not the point of the basic exercise we call democracy.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] ..partly to protect its “working-class vote” from the incursions of Nigel Farage’s English nationalists but also because the democratic outcome of the referendum demands it. Labour must certainly commit to a better Brexit deal than Mrs May’s, but a commitment to a confirmatory public vote on any deal can only be “on the table”, not a central plank of policy. It won’t do. The right of British politics is becoming an amalgam of strident English nationalism, nostalgic xenophobia and hyper-Thatcherism hiding behind the language of anti-Europeanism that seeks to legitimise those ugly values. [/perfectpullquote]

See what he means? Brexit is all these ghastly people who don’t listen to Hutton therefore we should ignore their views.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]Arguments about democracy and the case against English nationalism have to be confronted full on.[/perfectpullquote]

And Hutton’s making his case. Damn democracy.

At which point Damn Willy Hutton, eh?
